designing a nursery for newborns and new parents
As a nursery designer, I’ve seen many clients struggle to create a space that meets the needs of both their newborn baby and themselves. What do you think is the most challenging part of designing a nursery – is it choosing the right color scheme, selecting the perfect furniture, or something else entirely? When it comes to designing a nursery, there are many factors to consider, from the type of furniture to the color scheme. One of the most important pieces of furniture in a nursery is the bedside bassinet, which allows parents to keep their baby close while they sleep. I recently worked with a client who chose the bcol dark grey bedside bassinet for their nursery, and it turned out to be a great choice.
considering the parents’ needs
When designing a nursery, it’s easy to focus on the baby’s needs and forget about the parents’. But parents need a comfortable and functional space too, especially during those early months when they’ll be spending a lot of time in the nursery. What features do you think are essential for new parents in a nursery? A comfortable glider or rocking chair, for example, can be a lifesaver for exhausted parents.
choosing the right color scheme
The color scheme of a nursery can greatly impact the mood and atmosphere of the room. Soft, calming colors such as light blue or pale green can create a soothing environment for baby, while brighter colors like yellow or orange can stimulate their senses. Have you considered how different colors might affect your baby’s mood and development?
furniture layout and flow
The layout of the furniture in a nursery is also critical. A well-designed layout can make the room feel more spacious and functional, while a poorly designed one can make it feel cluttered and chaotic. Think about how you’ll be moving around the room – will you need to navigate around a large piece of furniture to get to the changing table?
storage and organization
A nursery can quickly become cluttered with toys, clothes, and other baby essentials. Adequate storage and organization systems are essential to keeping the room tidy and making it easier to find what you need when you need it. What systems have you put in place to keep your nursery organized?
lighting considerations
Lighting is another important factor to consider when designing a nursery. Soft, gentle lighting can create a cozy atmosphere, while harsh overhead lighting can be overwhelming for baby. Table lamps or floor lamps can provide warm and comforting pools of light.
safety features
Safety should always be top of mind when designing a nursery. This includes ensuring that any furniture or decor is securely anchored to the wall to prevent tipping, as well as installing window guards or stops to prevent falls.
- a secure crib with a firm mattress
- a changing table with storage for diapers and other essentials
- a comfortable glider or rocking chair for feeding and bonding
- a mobile or other visual stimulation for baby
- a white noise machine or fan to block out background noise
A well-designed nursery is not just about creating a beautiful space – it’s about creating a functional and safe environment that supports the health and well-being of both baby and parents.
putting it all together
Designing a nursery requires careful consideration of many different factors, from furniture and color scheme to safety features and storage. By thinking carefully about your needs and priorities, you can create a space that works beautifully for everyone – and that makes those early months with your new baby as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.
